Are you running hard after Jesus or slowly settling into a comfortable faith that never really costs you anything? We open 1 Peter 1:13-25 and let Peter confront us with a clear, demanding vision of Christian living for believers surrounded by a hostile world. The thread running through every verse is urgency: wake up, think clearly, and choose a life that actually looks redeemed.

We talk through what it means to “gird up the loins of your mind,” to stay sober-minded and watchful, and to evaluate every idea against the word of God. From there, we fix our hope on future grace, the return of Christ, and the reality that today’s trials are temporary while eternity is not. Along the way, vivid stories and historical examples sharpen the message: what we build our life on matters when everything else can burn, break, or fade.

Then the passage tightens into three non-negotiables that shape biblical discipleship and spiritual growth: be holy because God is holy, live as foreigners who are passing through, and love one another sincerely with a pure heart. We explore Christian holiness that is set apart from sin, redemption that cost the precious blood of Jesus rather than silver or gold, and a kind of sincere love “without wax” that holds up in the light. We close with a chance to respond in prayer and speak words of life over your future.

If this stirred you, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find this teaching on 1 Peter, Christian holiness, redemption, and sincere love.

Are

Are We Living All Out

SPEAKER_00

we truly living all out for Jesus? In 1 Peter 1, 13 to 25, the Apostle Peter writes to Christians scattered across a hostile world. He gives them and us three powerful, non-negotiable calls. First, be holy, because the God who saved us is holy. Second, live as foreigners in this world, passing through, not settling down. Third, love one another sincerely with a pure, fervent love. This is not casual Christianity. This is radical discipleship. In the next few minutes, we are going to walk slowly through this powerful passage together. My prayer is that the Holy Spirit will challenge us, convict us, and stir our hearts to live more faithfully and passionately for Jesus Christ. Let's open our hearts to what God is saying to us today.

Gird Up Your Mind

SPEAKER_00

Envision being given a map to travel in a distant land. As you set out on your journey, you hold tightly to this map. In 1 Peter 1, 13 to 25, the Apostle Peter encourages the believer to live holy lives, as that is what is required of us as children of God. Early in the chapter, Peter detailed the glory of the salvation that was now available to mankind because Jesus had come to earth to redeem man. In light of this knowledge, Peter is instructing us to gird up the loins of our mind. This admonition is similar to the present-day command to roll up our sleeves or take off our jacket. 1 Kings 18 46 tells us that the hand of the Lord was on Elijah. He then girded up his loins and outran Ahab and his horse-driven chariot to Jezreel, a distance of approximately 20 miles. This directive to gird up our loins indicates that as Christians, we must be prepared, ready, and fully engaged in the task that is at hand. Peter then calls on the believer to be fully sober. The disciple of Jesus is to be well balanced and self-control. We are not to be caught up in the most recent fads or the latest beliefs. Whatever we are being taught, we must evaluate it against the word of God. As Christians, we must keep our hearts and minds set on Jesus. Spurgeon lets us know that the word that is translated here as be sober also means to be watchful. Spurgeon alleges that many Christians are asleep and that in fact whole congregations are asleep. The minister snores theology and the people in the pews nod in chorus. Christians must be so awakened that we throw whole strength into the service of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ. The Apostle

Hope Set On Future Grace

SPEAKER_00

Peter then goes on to instruct believers to fix our hope on future grace. That is the appearing of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. When Jesus returns, he will reward every man according to his works. In the midst of our tribulations, trials, and sorrows, we are assured that what we experience here on earth is temporary and will soon pass away. Eternity is what matters. Furthermore, Jesus has promised that he will be with us to the end. During the terrible Chicago fire of 1871, Diel Moody's house burned down. As Moody surveyed the ruins, a friend said, I hear you lost everything. To which Moody replied, Well, you understand wrong. I have a good deal more left than what I lost. His puzzled friend asked, What do you mean? You're not a rich man. Mr. Moody then opened his Bible and read to him the promise that he who overcomes shall inherit these things and I will be his God.

Obedience Marks God’s Children

SPEAKER_00

In 1 Peter 1 14, the apostle Peter compares believers to children who obey their parents. Obeying God is evidence that we know God. This is what Jesus meant when he said in John 14, 15, If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Christian obedience is the obedience of people who know, love, and trust the person who issues the commands. However, it is only as we are empowered by God's grace and God's Spirit that we can obey God's law. As children of obedience, we are to live lives which reveal that we are being transformed from the inside. The ancient world was driven by the aim of finding newer and wilder ways to gratify the fleshly nature inherited from Adam. One historian described the excesses of Emperor Vitellius, who set his banquet table with 2,000 fish and 7,000 birds. As believers, we have been born into a new life and are called to live radically different from the majority of the world.

Holy Because God Is Holy

SPEAKER_00

Peter then emphatically states in 1 Peter 1:15 to 16 that we are to live holy lives because the God who has called us is a holy God. God has given the majestic title that is being used here, the Holy One, some 56 times in Scripture. Peter is calling for a supernaturally separated life which will be set apart from sin and the moral pollution of the world and dedicated to God's righteousness. The Greeks, the Romans, and almost all heathens manufactured gods, but these gods were terrible. Bacchus is a Greek Roman god of Bacchanal that permeates carnival. According to mythology, Bacchus would induce a frenzy among his followers through wine, music, and dance. However, according to these same legends, Bacchus would destroy any that did not believe in him. In distinct contrast to this behavior, we find that the God we serve, Jesus, is a God of love and holiness. Our goal is to be holy like our God because we desire to be like him. One outstanding example of such holiness is Joseph refusing to commit adultery, leaving his garment in the hands of his boss's wife, and running away. The command to live holy is impossible in our own strength. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can live such lives. Church membership and religious profession do not make people true Christians. These must be linked to a godly life. We become holy through a study of the Bible and the application of its truths to daily life. Let us reflect on the truth that God is calling us to live holy lives. History

When Scripture Transforms A Culture

SPEAKER_00

proves that studying God's word and applying it to our lives changes the environment. In 1789, a group of mutineers put their officers on a longboat, took control of the HMS bounty. They then sailed to Tahiti to enjoy a comfortable life. Fearing punishment, some of them, along with several Polynesians, later moved to uninhabited Pitkin Island. Sexual immorality, jealousy, anger, alcohol, and disease took their toll on the inhabitants. Eventually there was only one Englishman, ten women, and many children left. The remaining Englishman Alexander Smith discovered the Bible in the ship's goods. Smith studied the word and decided it held the answer to the community's problems. He then initiated Sunday worship and daily prayer times for the remaining people. In 1808, an American ship happening upon the island was surprised to discover a thriving group of 35 English-speaking Christians. What if God is calling us to study his word so that our lives and the lives of those around us can be transformed?

Live Like A Foreigner Here

SPEAKER_00

Imagine living our lives here on earth as though we are only guests who are passing through. That is what Jesus did, as he never had a place to call home during his time ministering. In 1 Peter 1 17, Peter admonishes Christians to live as foreigners in this world, as we are calling on a father who judges each work impartially. When Moses decided to strike the rock rather than speaking to it, God cut him off from entering the promised land. The commandment for Moses who parted the Red Sea was the same as for anyone else. The Greek word that is used here for foreigner refers to someone who is just passing through a place. Such people don't have the rights or privileges of citizenship. The Israelites were never citizens of Egypt. They started off as sojourners and eventually became slaves. Peter is saying that we must not act like the world is our home. We are only passing through. Additionally, Peter is saying that one day we will have to answer to God for all that we have done while here on earth.

Redeemed By Christ’s Precious Blood

SPEAKER_00

In 1 Peter 1, 18 to 21, Peter speaks about the price that was paid to grant us our new lives in Christ. The word redeem here means that someone paid the price for our freedom. At the time of Peter writing this epistle, it was believed that the Roman Empire had as many as six million slaves. The buying and selling of these slaves was a major business. If a person wanted to free someone, this individual would purchase a person to be his or her personal slave and then grant that person his or her freedom. Peter is saying that precious objects, that is silver and gold, were used to free slaves in those days. However, these seemingly valuable but perishable items, silver and gold, will all pass away and be worthless when God comes back for this earth. Those of us who know Jesus as Lord and Savior have been set free with something infinitely more wonderful than silver or gold. The precious blood of Jesus was shed on our behalf. Peter affirms that we who call on the name of Jesus no longer have to live empty lives. Adam's sin had condemned all of mankind to death and separation from God. However, we who name the name of Christ have been given the ability to live full, meaningful, and wonderful lives. The spotless Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world, only had to die once and for all to eliminate the sin of mankind. Before the world existed, Jesus knew that he was going to come to earth to redeem mankind. Jesus came, was crucified, died, and rose from the dead. As long as we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that Jesus rose from the dead, we are saved. We become heirs and joint heirs with Christ.

Models Of Passing Through

SPEAKER_00

Truly living as foreigners here on earth. Christian history honors those who lived as though they were only passing through this world. Among these is Sunda Singh, who brought Christianity to many people in India and Tibet. In April 1923, Sunda received word that his father had died. According to Shia Singh's will, Sunda was to receive a large sum of money. Sunda decided to buy a house to share with people in need. He would keep one room for himself where he could sleep, pray, and write books. Sunda bought an old mission house situated in the middle of the poorest area of Sabatu. He then invited Dr. Peoples from the Leper Hospital and his family to move in with him. Sunda now had a room to come back to whenever he wanted. He also did not have to worry about who was taking key of the place while he was gone. In 1929, on April 18th, Sunda sat down at the desk in his room and penned a letter. Sunda stated that he set no value on his own life when he competed with the joy of finishing the course and fulfilling the commission of the Lord Jesus. After traveling to Tibet later that year, Sundar Singh was never heard of again. In 1933, the Indian government declared Sundar Singh officially dead. Are we truly living all out for Jesus? Vision living each second of every minute of every hour as though it might truly be our last. Imagine the level of urgency that would imbue all of our thoughts and our actions. In 1

Love Without Wax

SPEAKER_00

Peter 1 22 to 25, Peter lets us know that once we have become part of God's family, sincere love will manifest itself in our lives towards each other. This is one of the radical changes that believing in Christ causes in us as believers. Holy living is incomplete if it isn't accompanied by sincere love. Our English word sincere comes from the Latin sincerus. This word originally meant without watts. Early Roman merchants would set their earthen and porcelain jars out for sale. If a crack appeared in one, they would fill it with the same color wax as a jar, so a buyer would not be aware they were cracked. However, astute buyers learned to hold these jars out in the sun. If the jar was cracked, the wax would melt and the crack would be revealed. Honest merchants would mark their wares as being sinceress, that is, without wax. In John 13, 34 to 35, Jesus told his disciples that he was giving them a new commandment to love one another even as he had loved them. The Apostle John stated in 1 John 3 14 that love for the brethren signals that we have passed from death into life. Our new life in Christ is to be lived out in a community setting. In the New Testament, Christianity forged a radical relationship in Christ. Believing Greeks and Jews, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarians, cities, slaves and freemen, men and women were now all one in Christ. Such a diverse cultural community had continual need for emphasis on love of the brethren. Peter

New Birth Through God’s Word

SPEAKER_00

affirms that we all new birth to the seed that will not perish, the word of God. Wherever the Bible has gone and the good news about Jesus Christ has been preached, the miracle of new birth has taken place. This is so whether it occurs among a savage tribe or in a sophisticated educated culture. People are transformed inwardly by God's power through his word, not through human self-improvement. A skeptic once told Gaylord Kambarami, the general secretary of the Bible Society of Zimbabwe, if you give me that New Testament, I will roll the pages and use them to make cigarettes. Gaylord replied, I understand that, but at least promise to read the page of the New Testament before you smoke it. When the man agreed, Gaylord gave him the New Testament, and that was the last he saw of him for 15 years. Then while Gaylord was attending a Methodist convention in Zimbabwe, the speaker on the platform suddenly spotted him, pointed him out to the audience, and said, This man doesn't remember me. But 15 years ago he tried to sell me a New Testament. When I refused to buy it, he gave it to me, even though I told him I would use the pages to roll cigarettes. I smoke Matthew and I smoke Mark and I smoke Luke. But when I got to John 3.16, I couldn't smoke anymore. My life was changed from that moment. That man is now a full-time evangelist preaching the word.

The Word Outlasts Every Critic

SPEAKER_00

In 1 Peter 1 24 to 25, Peter quotes from Isaiah 46 to 8, all people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever. Peter states that we have to be acutely aware that our time here on earth is limited. Human life, however beautiful in appearance, is fleeting and perishable, but God in his being, word, and purpose is enduring. The Bible has confounded its critics for 3,500 years. Voltaire, the French atheist, who died in 1778, boasted that within 100 years of his lifetime, Christianity would be swept from the earth. Fifty years after his death, his own printing press and house were being used by the Geneva Bible Society to produce Bibles. In the late 1800s, Robert G. Ingersoll, who was nicknamed the Great Agnostic for his anti-Christian stance, once said that in 25 years the Bible will be a forgotten book. Ingersoll died in 1899, and he is for the most part the one who is forgotten. God's word endures as it always will. Manuscripts such as the Bible are fragile documents that can easily be destroyed by fire and water. Centuries ago, the famed Library of Alexandria was a place to do research in the ancient world. Then on a fateful day in 47 BC, Julius Caesar set fire to his ships in the Alexandrian harbor to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. The fire soon spread to the docks and the naval arsenal, ultimately destroying 400,000 of the library's precious scrolls. The word of God has survived book burnings, riots, revolutions, persecutions, and catastrophes. Yet scholars tell us that the manuscripts have been accurately preserved through millennia of copying. Let us reflect on the truth that the word of God will endure forever. We started

Final Commitments And Key Takeaways

by asking if we are truly living all out for Jesus. In this episode, we determine that we must live holy lives because our God is holy. Additionally, as children of God, we are foreigners in this world. Importantly, as members of the body of Christ, we must have sincere love for each other. So let us prepare our minds. Let us fix our hope on Christ. Let us live as foreigners in this world. Let us love one another. Another sincerely by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us live all out for Jesus.

Speak Words Of Life

SPEAKER_00

Please join me as we confess words of life over all of our lives. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we are still holding on to God's unchanging hand. We are still in God's holy plan. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we are living holy lives as God requires. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we are feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, giving clothes to those in need, ministering to the sick and visiting those in prison, and we are doing so to the least of those among us, as when we do so we are ministering to Jesus. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we have received healing, as by his stripes we are healed. From the crown of our head to the soles of our feet, all of our bodily organs are working correctly. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that God is ordering our steps, that all weapons that are formed against us have been utterly and completely destroyed, and every tongue that is rising against us in judgment is condemned. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that all generational curses are cancelled. Anything that runs in our ancestral bloodline that is not of God has no power over us, our children and our grandchildren, and is eliminated forever right now. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that angels are watching over and keeping our family, our children, our grandchildren, our loved ones safe. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that every negative word that has been and is be spoken over our lives and that of our family, children, grandchildren, and loved ones is cancelled and sent back to the pit from whence it came. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we are the head and not the tail. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we are not and will never be ashamed. Our enemies have not and never will triumph over us. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that anything that is not of God that has been dispatched to hinder our blessings, our progress, and our well-being is immediately destroyed. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we are financially in line with God's word, and as such we are lenders and not borrowers. As a result, all of our debts have been paid and are forgiven. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that the enemy of our souls has no authority over our finances and our funds, and that we are good stewards of the money that God has placed in our keeping. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus in the area of business and our carriers, that just as Isaac reaped a hundredfold, the blessings of Abraham are falling on us, and we are reaping a hundredfold from whatever we put our hands to. We declare and decree in the name of Jesus that we are living under an open heaven in every area of our lives. Blessings are falling on us, our family and our loved ones.

Psalm 23 And Final Blessing

SPEAKER_00

These blessings are being manifested in our lives, in the spiritual and in the physical. Let's repeat the 23rd Psalm together. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restored my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Amen.
